Kokum -dry: An indigenous Indian fruit. Grows in western Ghats. The ripe fruits are dried and stored. A very unique sour taste makes it very popular. If you replace the tamarind with this while making sambar, it would be finger licking tasty! It is used extensively in coastal and malnad regional cuisine. Tastes great with fish. The fruit contains citric acid in plenty and it has many health benefits. Soak two pieces of kokum in water overnight and drink the water in the morning to drive away acidity. Reduces body fat also.
